Acorn Foundation's committment to our community was recognised at the 2011 Westpac Tauranga Business Awards on 4th November. Acorn received the award for Community Organisation of the Year at the gala dinner held at the new TECT Arena at Baypark Stadium. Acorn's deputy Chair Tracy Rea briefly shared the Acorn story with the 500 guests who included Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby, and MPs Tony Ryall and Simon Bridges.

Acorn Scholarships
Some Acorn donors have specified scholarships for their annual distributions. The following scholarships are available:
Eva Trowbridge Scholarship
One year scholarship of approx $3000 for adult students (aged 25 or over) studying at the University of Waikato Tauranga Campus, and residing in Tauranga or the Western Bay of Plenty. Applications close the first week in September each year, and should be made through the University of Waikato Scholarships office.

BOP Medical Students Scholarship
One year scholarship of approx $2500 for a second year medical student at the University of Otago who completed their final year of schooling at a secondary school in the Western Bay of Plenty. Applications close 31 July each year and are made through the University of Otago Scholarships office.

Page/Acorn Engineering Scholarships
Up to five scholarships valued at $5000 each provided for apprentices or adult employees of Tauranga engineering firms who are studying to gain an engineering qualification. Applications close 20 October each year. Employees from the following engineering firms are eligable:
- Robert Page Engineering
- Boshier Engineering
- Contract Mechanical Services
- Mouats Engineering
- Jensen Steel Fabricators
- Endevour Engineering & Tooling Ltd
Dale Carnegie Scholarships
$15,000 per annum provided to each Tauranga secondary school to allow Year 13 students to attend a Dale Carnegie leadership training course. The students are selected by their schools.

Outward Bound Scholarships
$2800 in total in 2011 for young people from Tauranga and Western BOP to attend Outward Bound courses. Enquiries should be directed through Outward Bound, ph 04 472 3440 or visit www.outwardbound.co.nz
