“Originally when I set up my Acorn endowment fund, I simply made some provision in my Will. Over the years, I saw the difference that Acorn was making in the local community on an annual basis, and the idea grew that starting to make annual donations could more meaningfully benefit the community that I live in now, rather than at some distant point in the future.
I was fortunate to receive a good education, so an obvious choice for me was to do something to help other people through furthering their education. Two years ago, the Acorn Foundation helped me set up annual scholarships, one in the Arts and the other for adult students at the Tauranga campus of the University of Waikato. I get real pleasure from meeting these talented young people and knowing that in some small way these scholarships are helping them to realise their dreams.
So I now have the pleasure of seeing my contributions making a difference, as well as claiming one third back as a tax credit, which is certainly helpful. Acorn makes the whole process very simple, and it’s good to know that what I have started will continue into the future. I like to think that my Acorn fund will contribute towards building a better society for us all.”
