People savers basic first aid courses are a great tool for all ages, and are delivered by the New Zealand Red Cross throughout the Tauranga area to students aged 8-12 years, at no cost to the schools. Delivered by a Community Trainer, the course teaches the children some good basic first aid skills, including keeping themselves safe, dangers, breathing, recovery position, shock, burns and scalds, nose bleeds, broken bones and poisons. It is an interactive programme, where they learn by practicing what to do in an emergency.
Recent course participant Elle said "Kids get to do stuff like saving people and all that important stuff."
The Red Cross will be able to provide more of these courses to schools around the Western BOP thanks to the generosity of Acorn donor Marlies O'Reilly, who nominated Red Cross as an annual recipient from her endowment fund.
