The Boy’s Brigade has been operating in NZ for over 120 years with the aim of producing young men who will become confident, responsible, contributing adults. It has provided a wonderful heritage out of which ICONZ has now grown. The ICONZ programme, developed and piloted in Tauranga 10 years ago, has been designed specifically to address boys in their stages of development, with four different age group sections offering fun, adventure
based activities and mentoring to boys from 6—17 years of age.
One ICONZ parent whose son has been diagnosed with ADHD says that ICONZ is “a wonderful outlet for him—he can be himself and is so accepted.” Another parent says of her son, “James (not his real name) has learned to trust males again, and this was very hard for him to do. His father turned his back on him and has nothing to do with him … I just wanted to say ‘thank you’, as I don’t think you realise what an impact you guys have had in James’ life.”
Acorn funding is helping to support the ICONZ programme. To find out more about ICONZ or find your nearest group see their website bb.org.nz.
