About Jann Medlicott:

The middle child of a family of five, Jann enjoyed an idyllic childhood in rural Taranaki. Her parents were passionately committed to giving her a good education and encouraged her love of the arts from a very early age.

Jann graduated from Otago University in 1969 with a MbChb and in 1976 completed her radiology training in England. Upon returning to New Zealand, she worked at Tauranga Hospital as Clinical Director of Radiology from 1985-1995. Jann subsequently co-founded two private radiology practices in Tauranga, where she worked until 2011.

Retirement allowed Jann time to pursue her love of literature. She deeply admired the calibre of New Zealand writers, and it upset her that they appeared to be under-appreciated and under-valued. In 2015, Jann decided to remedy this by offering an award of $50,000 annually (adjusted for wage inflation each year) to the top fiction writer, to be awarded at the NZ Book Awards. The award is now known as the Jann Medlicott Acorn Prize for Fiction.

In 2012, Jann established a second annual award to a creative artist from Tauranga, which will also continue in perpetuity.

Jann was recognised in the 2021 Queen’s New Year’s Honours, becoming a Member of the NZ Order of Merit for her services to philanthropy, the arts, and radiology.
