Nurse Betty’s Story: How Giving Changes Lives
For Betty Owen, giving is about much more than money. It is about purpose, connection and using what you have, whether that is time, interest, skills or financial support, to make a meaningful difference.
In this special video, Betty welcomes us into her home and shares the story behind her giving through the Acorn Foundation. Her support for Blind Low Vision NZ helps provide trained guide dogs that give people greater independence, confidence and freedom.
Betty’s contribution to our community extends far beyond her generosity as a donor. After a long nursing career in the Western Bay of Plenty, she helped turn an important idea into what would become Waipuna Hospice, an organisation that has since supported countless people and families across Tauranga.
As Betty says, “It starts with a spark of an idea and then turns into something magnificent.”
Through the Acorn Foundation, donors can choose the causes they would like to support or leave their gift unrestricted, allowing Acorn to respond to the community’s greatest needs over time. Because the original gift is invested, it can continue generating distributions for local charities year after year.
Betty’s story is a wonderful reminder that giving is a two-way street, and that one person’s generosity can create an impact that lasts for generations.
