Student Volunteer Army Steps Up After Waihi Beach Flooding
“On behalf of the Student Volunteer Army (SVA), we would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the Western Bay Emergency Response Fund for the funding in recognition of Student Volunteer Army flood response efforts this past January. This contribution recognises the efforts of six of our team members from the Waikato University - Hamilton Campus, who organised and mobilised during their summer holiday break to support the recovery. These volunteers responded with enthusiasm, matching to a specific call for help in Waihi Beach where they worked to clear out a local gym and cafe after flood waters had entered the premises. By moving heavy furniture and assisting with the general cleanup, these students played a direct role in helping these local businesses jumpstart their recovery process.
This funding is crucial in ensuring that SVA remains response-ready for whatever challenges the future may hold, empowering our young volunteers with the tools and coordination they need to lead in times of emergency. These funds help ensure that when our community calls for help, whether it’s clearing silt or salvaging a local business, our team is equipped, safe, and ready to step up and take action immediately.” Pip Lovell, Foundation Coordinator - Student Volunteer Army.
“The Student Volunteer Army arrived with boots on, sleeves rolled up and minds wide open. In one of our toughest weeks, their practical help and positivity made a huge difference to our recovery. They helped remove over 28 electrical items, including 18 fridge/freezers. washing machine, tumble dyer, dishwasher and hot plates. We’re so thankful for their mahi and the reminder that community has your back when you need it most.” Jo Coombes, Surf Shack Eatery
