BOP Youth Development Trust - Tauranga Boxing Academy

The TBA (Tauranga Boxing Academy ) was the brainchild of local businessman Craig Nees who could see a need for a program to empower and provide opportunities for our youth to become the best versions of themselves.

Craig was joined by head coach/mentor, Henry Fa’afili, a successful professional athlete for NZ & Samoa (Rugby League & Rugby Union). Upon hanging up his boots Henry had a strong desire to help others and fully committed to helping bring this gym to life. Henry is a strong believer in how the benefits of physical exercise and discipline in sport manifest positively to other areas of life, and wanted others to find this for themselves also.

Paora Howe also joined the team with 50 years experience in education and policy writing, and chairman of the Waka Ama Board with a wealth of knowledge to bring to the table. Paora has a strong social conscience so this program appealed to him immediately.

The teams aim is to provide members with long-term support by teaching them discipline and fitness, by promoting positive values, and through consistent and appropriate role modelling. In this way, members will become future programme leaders, helping us all to build the kind of community we want to develop in this city.

In 2020 Tauranga Boxing Academy received funding from the Cooney Lees Morgan Fund, the Haine Family Fund, and the Tauranga Police CIB Fund.
